Tax and Advisory

Specialist tax advice and transaction
support for businesses

Tax touches almost every decision a business makes, from the everyday VAT treatment of a transaction through to the structuring of an acquisition that will only happen once.

The rules are detailed, they change often and the cost of getting a position wrong, whether in penalties, a missed relief or a botched transaction, is rarely proportionate to the original question.

Businesses that treat tax as a compliance afterthought tend to discover the cost of that approach at exactly the wrong moment, whether that is an HMRC enquiry, a due diligence process that surfaces a historic issue or a relief that was never claimed and can no longer be recovered.

Our tax and advisory practice brings specialist depth across compliance, planning, transactions and disputes together under one team, so the advice you receive on one issue is given with a full view of how it affects everything else.

How we support businesses

We take the time to properly understand your business before we advise on it. That means getting to know how you operate, what you are trying to achieve and where the pressure points sit, not just the transaction or return in front of us each time.

That understanding is what turns a technically correct answer into genuinely useful advice.

Knowing why a business is structured the way it is, what the owners are planning towards and how one decision will affect the next means we can point out the relief you would have missed, flag the structure that will cause a problem in three years, or tell you honestly when a transaction is not worth pursuing.

Our specialists and tax advisers work as an extension of your team, so that the advice gets sharper and more relevant the longer we work together.

The services we offer

A number of specialisms sit within this part of the practice:

from our outsourcing team

Across every piece of tax and advisory work, three things define the experience of working with us:

Technical depth applied commercially

The technical answer is delivered in terms that connect to the decision you are trying to make, whether that is a transaction to complete, a structure to choose or a position to defend, rather than in isolation from it.

Partner-led at all times

Compliance calendars, transaction negotiations and HMRC enquiries all receive the level of senior judgement the situation calls for, with an experienced manager running the process day to day.

Continuity of expertise

The same people handle your tax affairs from year to year and across specialisms, so the depth of working knowledge that builds up is the basis on which the more difficult questions are answered well.

Businesses bring their tax and advisory needs to us because they want a trusted team that can move between the routine and the complex without losing sight of the wider picture.

Frequently Asked Questions faq

Which of these services does our business actually need?

It depends on where the business is and what it is trying to do. A business with a straightforward compliance requirement may only need corporate tax and VAT support. A business approaching a transaction, an R&D claim or a significant capital investment will typically draw on several of these specialisms at once. An initial conversation with our team will help identify where the value sits for you.

Can these services work together on a single transaction or issue?

Yes and that is how much of our most valuable work is delivered. A transaction, for example, might draw on corporate finance for the deal itself, tax structuring to get the mechanics right, capital allowances analysis on the assets involved and compliance support to bring the resulting entity into our regular cycle. Because these teams sit together, the advice arrives joined up rather than as separate opinions you have to reconcile yourself.

We are currently under HMRC enquiry. Can you take this on alongside our existing accountant?

Yes and that is a common arrangement. Where the existing accountant continues to handle routine compliance, our investigations team takes the enquiry workstream. We coordinate appropriately so the position presented to HMRC is unified and the standing relationship with the existing adviser is preserved.

How do you keep clients up to date with tax changes that affect them?

Where something material changes, such as a shift in the corporation tax regime, the R&D scheme, capital allowances rates or VAT rules relevant to your sector, we explain what it means for your business and how we will adjust the advice or the compliance approach accordingly.

How do I get started working with your tax and advisory team?

We arrange an initial consultation with one of our partners or senior tax specialists to understand your position and objectives. From there, we scope the work required, whether that is a single specialist engagement or a wider coordinated response, before work begins.
