Personal Tax Planning

Support for individuals with a complex personal tax position

Personal tax has become more complex, more changeable and more consequential than at any point in recent memory.

The April 2025 changes to the residence regime, the restrictions on reliefs that previously went unchallenged and HMRC’s increasing focus on high-net-worth individuals mean that the planning conversations matter more than they ever have.

Our personal tax team works with you to build a thorough understanding of your position across all of its moving parts.

The planning conversations happen across the year as the events that affect your tax position arise or legislation changes that may affect your tax efficiency.

The cumulative understanding of your tax position supports the conversations that matter the most, which means we are able to identify opportunities that others may have missed.

How we deliver personal tax advice

Each client has a named lead adviser, an annual compliance cycle and a planning calendar that picks up the events as they happen.

Planning sits alongside the compliance. Where the year has produced gains, losses, business changes, family events or international activity, we work through the options before the return is finalised.

The result is a position that is well thought through, not a return that records decisions taken without input.

Our expertise covers

  • Income tax planning and optimisation
  • Capital Gains Tax
  • Inheritance Tax and estate planning
  • Trusts and trust returns
  • Non-UK residents and the statutory residence test
  • Post-April 2025 residence-based regime and the four-year FIG window

  • Crypto asset tax
  • HMRC enquiries and personal tax investigations

Where your position spans multiple advisers such as investment managers, solicitors, trustees or overseas tax advisers, we co-ordinate to keep the picture joined up.

What you can expect
from our personal tax planning team

Three things define our personal tax work:

A highly qualified team

Our team has years of experience working within some of the UK’s largest accountancy firms and have developed a detailed understanding of the tax regime to help you find opportunities to minimise your liabilities.

Year-round advice

Our work spans the whole year. Planning is taken as events arise, not crammed into the final weeks before the filing deadline or start of a new tax year.

Discretion built in

Personal tax information and planning is handled sensitively. The standard of discretion we offer goes above and beyond to ensure your position is protected.

Individuals come to us on personal tax because they want a trusted guide who understands the whole picture, stays with them across the years and is present in the planning conversations when the decisions are actually being made – not just after the return needs filing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you handle our personal tax alongside my business?

Yes, many of our clients are individuals whose personal tax position is closely connected to a business interest. The interaction between the personal return, the company position, any extraction of value and the wider planning around shares, dividends and capital is part of what we handle. Having one firm holding both sides makes the planning more effective.

What happens if HMRC opens an enquiry into our return?

We handle it. The investigations team take the lead on substantive enquiries with the compliance team continuing to handle the ongoing work. Tax fee insurance is available to cover the professional fees of a defence within the policy terms. The investigations page sets out more detail.
